December 2023

The LAtest and greatest in the world of safety

Per your committee peers 😊

The Safety Sense email being sent out to all active employees for the month of December talks about walking safely in and out of the workplace.  This time of year, the weather can drastically change, you may walk into work on a dry sidewalk and come out after your shift to 6+ inches of snow with ice!

This is a great time to discuss sidewalk and parking lot clearing routines with clients.  Find out if they contract this out or handle it in house.  Remind them that we are not only responsible for employees’ safety on the job but also walking on their property while coming to and leaving from work.

Looking back at November many finger injuries along with seven lacerations.  We need employees to simply slow down.  If at any time employees are feeling rushed beyond safety measures, they should notify us.  This is the only way we know to discuss these matters with clients.  We should also make sure the correct gloves are being distributed for positions that require gloves and remind employees when using a box cutter to cut away from the body.

Have you checked out the Safety Station on the Intranet yet?  Well, what are you waiting for?  This is where you will find the monthly newsletter, safety statistics, and YTD injuries by branch.  Check it out!  If you’d like to see any other safety information there, reach out to Betsy and Jeff.  Your ideas are always welcome!

Remember with each incident it is our responsibility to find the root cause of the problem and figure out what needs to change or how to fix the problem to ensure the safety for our employees!  Even if the SA declines treatment for the injury we still want to investigate what happened so we can prevent it from happening again.  Need help finding the root cause to complete your injury file, more importantly, the Post Accident/Injury Questionnaire?  Remember the following:

What happened;

How did it happen;

Why it happened;

What needs to be corrected. Work with your clients to make sure our SA’s are safe, and we are providing them with a safe space and environment to work in.  Safety is a team effort!
